Aaliyah Dana Haughton was an American singer and actress. She has been credited for helping to redefine contemporary R&B, pop and hip hop, earning her the nicknames the "Princess of R&B" and "Queen of Urban Pop".
Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born on January 16, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York. She was the daughter of Diane and Michael Haughton. Aaliyah's parents were both African-American, and she had three siblings. Her family moved to Detroit, Michigan when she was five years old.
Aaliyah began her singing career in 1990 at the age of 11 when she was featured on R&B group Immature's album, "Playtyme Is Over". She released her debut album in 1994 entitled "Age Ain't Nothing But a Number" which spawned two hit singles, including her breakthrough single "Back & Forth". The success of this album established Aaliyah as an R&B sensation.
In 1996, Aaliyah released her second album "One In A Million", which sold over 8 million copies worldwide and spawned four hit singles. Her success continued with her third studio album "Aaliyah" (2001) which debuted at number two on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 3 million copies in the United States alone.
Aaliyah's fourth studio album "I Care 4 U" was released posthumously in 2002 after a tragic plane crash that took her life on August 25th 2001. The album featured previously unreleased material along with popular hits from throughout her career as well as five newly recorded songs. The album went platinum and has sold over 7 million copies worldwide since its release.
Throughout her career, Aaliyah won numerous awards including six Soul Train Music Awards, one American Music Award and two MTV Video Music Awards among many others. She also earned multiple Grammy nominations for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song throughout her career before tragically passing away at the young age of 22.
