About

Amitabh Harivansh Bachchan, was born on October 11th, 1942 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. He is an Indian movie actor and television presenter who gained fame for his “angry young man” characters in the 1970s. He has starred in over 200 films and earned numerous awards and accolades for his work including four National Film Awards as Best Actor and 15 Filmfare Awards.

Bachchan was born to poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan and Teji Bachchan. His father's inspiration led him to pursue a career in acting. In 1969, he made his debut in Saat Hindustani which won him a National Film Award for Best Newcomer. This was followed by an award-winning performance in Anand (1971) where he played a terminally ill patient alongside Rajesh Khanna.

In the mid-1970s, Bachchan established himself as an action hero with roles in Zanjeer (1973), Deewaar (1975) and Sholay (1975). These films cemented his status as a star of Hindi cinema. He also ventured into comedy with Chupke Chupke (1975) and Amar Akbar Anthony (1977). During this period, he also began taking on more serious roles such as in Kabhi Kabhie (1976) and Trishul (1978).

Bachchan continued to dominate the silver screen throughout the 1980s with critically acclaimed performances in movies like Silsila (1981) and Namak Halaal (1982). In 1984 he won another National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in Coolie. In the 1990s, he experienced a slump but bounced back strongly with Mohabbatein (2000). He has since been seen in many commercial successes such as Baghban(2003), Sarkar(2005), Paa(2009) and Piku(2015).

In addition to acting, Bachchan has hosted several television shows including Kaun Banega Crorepati which has become one of the most watched game shows on Indian television. He has been active politically too, having campaigned for several politicians over the years. For his contributions to cinema, he has received numerous honors including India’s highest civilian honor – The Padma Vibhushan.
