Ashley attended Campbell Hall School in Los Angeles and graduated from the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism in 2008.

Olsen started her acting career at a young age alongside her twin sister Mary-Kate in the television series Full House, which ran from 1987 to 1995. They reprised their roles as Michelle Tanner in the subsequent films You Again? (1990) and Double, Double Toil and Trouble (1993). The twins also starred together in the films To Grandmother’s House We Go (1992), It Takes Two (1995), Billboard Dad (1998), Our Lips Are Sealed (2000), So Little Time (2001–2002), New York Minute (2004) and When In Rome (2010).

Ashley also had a successful solo acting career appearing in films such as How The West Was Fun (1994) and Passport to Paris (1999). She continued to act until 2004 when she decided to retire from Hollywood and focus on fashion design. Along with her sister Mary-Kate, they founded two fashion companies called Dualstar Entertainment Group LLC, which produces clothing lines such as Elizabeth and James and The Row. Ashley also briefly returned to acting with guest appearances on TV shows such as Project Runway: All Stars and Hawaii Five-0.
