George Alan O'Dowd, known professionally as Boy George, is an English singer, songwriter, DJ, author and mixed media artist. Best known for his soulful voice and his androgynous appearance, Boy George has been the lead singer of the pop band Culture Club since the group's formation in 1981.
Boy George, born George Alan O’Dowd on June 14, 1961, is an English singer, songwriter, DJ and fashion designer. He is best known as the lead singer of the new wave band Culture Club. He was born in Eltham, London to Dinah and Gerry O'Dowd and has two siblings. From a young age he had a keen interest in music and culture, often spending time with his friends listening to soul and punk music at local clubs.
In 1976, Boy George formed Culture Club with Jon Moss, Mikey Craig and Roy Hay. After signing with Virgin Records in 1982, the band released their debut single “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?” which was an international success and propelled them to stardom. Throughout their career they released five studio albums and achieved numerous hit singles such as “Karma Chameleon”, “Time (Clock of the Heart)” and “Victims”. In 1984 they won Best British Group at the Brit Awards as well as Best International Group at the American Music Awards.
In 1987 Boy George began a solo career with his debut album Sold which spawned three hit singles including “Everything I Own” which reached No 1 on both sides of the Atlantic. Since then he has released seven more studio albums as well as numerous collaborations with other artists such as Annie Lennox, Sir Elton John and James Brown. He has also appeared on Broadway in musicals such as Taboo for which he received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in 2004.
In addition to his music career Boy George has designed clothes for several fashion labels including Giorgio Armani and Katharine Hamnett. He has also been involved in various charities supporting animal rights causes.
