Walter Bruce Willis is a German-born American actor, comedian, producer, and singer, who is best known for his television role as David Addison on the ABC comedy-drama series Moonlighting from 1985 to 1989, and as John McClane in the Die Hard franchise, which were mostly critical and uniformly financial successes.
Bruce Willis was born Walter Bruce Willis on March 19, 1955 in Idar-Oberstein, Germany. His father, David Willis, was an American soldier and his mother, Marlene K., was a German woman from Kassel. He has three older sisters - Florence, Elisabeth and Roberta. When he was two years old, his family moved to the United States and settled in Carneys Point Township, New Jersey.
Willis grew up in a friendly environment and attended Penns Grove High School where he became the class clown and participated in school plays. After graduating high school in 1973 he enrolled at Montclair State College where he studied drama and worked at a local resort as a security guard. In 1977 he dropped out of college to pursue a career as an actor.
He made his film debut with a minor role in the 1981 movie The Verdict but it wasn’t until 1988 that Willis gained recognition for his role as John McClane in Die Hard which earned him international fame. Over the next few years Willis starred in several movies including; Look Who's Talking (1989), Pulp Fiction (1994) , Armageddon (1998) and The Sixth Sense (1999).
In 2000, he won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor for his role in Friends and later went on to star in blockbuster films such as Sin City (2005), Live Free or Die Hard (2007) and Red 2 (2013). He also provided voice overs for animated films such as Planet 51 (2009) and Over the Hedge (2006). He is currently working on projects such as Death Wish (2018) and Glass (2019).
