About

Charles Spencer Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889 in London, England. His zodiac sign is Aries, and his ethnicity is British. He was the son of Hannah Hill and Charles Chaplin Sr., both music hall entertainers. He was an only child, but he had eight half-siblings from his mother's second marriage. Charles' parents were both alcoholics and due to their frequent absences and neglect, he lived in poverty during his childhood.

He started performing in a local theatrical company at the age of nine. When he turned seventeen, he joined Fred Karno's company which sent him to America in 1910. After a successful tour with the company, Charlie decided to stay in America where he signed with Keystone Films studio in 1914. During this time, Charlie created many memorable characters such as The Tramp who became widely popular all over the world. In 1915, he also wrote and directed his first film titled “Making a Living” followed by “The Kid” in 1921 which made him one of the most popular filmmakers of that time.

In 1923, he formed United Artists studio with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W Griffiths and released several films including “The Gold Rush” (1925), “Modern Times” (1936) and “The Great Dictator” (1940). He received several awards for his work including an honorary Academy Award and two Oscars for writing the score of “Limelight” (1952) and for writing the film “The Great Dictator” (1941). Charlie Chaplin died on December 25th 1977 at his home in Vevey Switzerland at age 88 after suffering from a stroke earlier that year.
