Cher, born Cherilyn Sarkisian on May 20, 1946, in El Centro, California, is an iconic pop singer and actress. Her parents, John and Georgia Holt, divorced when she was young; her mother later married Gilbert LaPiere. She dropped out of high school to pursue a career in show business and moved to Los Angeles with her then-boyfriend, Sonny Bono. The couple formed the musical duo Sonny & Cher and released their first single, "I Got You Babe," which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 1965. They had several more hit records over the next few years before they split up in 1974.

After their breakup, Cher pursued a solo career and released her debut album in 1979. She went on to release many more successful albums over the next two decades that spawned such hits as "Believe," "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss)." In addition to her music career, she also starred in several films throughout the 1980s and 1990s including Moonstruck (1987) for which she won an Oscar for Best Actress. She has also been active in television appearing as one of the judges on The Voice UK from 2014-2015.

Cher has sold more than 100 million records worldwide over her 50+ year career making her one of the best selling female artists of all time. She has been inducted into both the Grammy Hall of Fame and Hollywood Walk of Fame and has earned numerous awards for her music including an Academy Award, a Grammy Award and a Golden Globe Award.
