Deborah Ann “Debbie” Harry was born on July 1, 1945 in Miami, Florida. She is an American singer-songwriter and actress best known as the lead singer of the punk rock and new wave band Blondie. Harry's parents were separated when she was three, and she was raised by her mother and stepfather Richard Smith in Hawthorne, New Jersey.
Harry started her music career in 1967 singing with folk rock group The Wind in the Willows. In 1974, she formed the rock band Blondie which went on to become one of the most successful bands of the period. Blondie released their debut album “Blondie” in 1976 which spawned hits such as “X Offender” and “Rip Her To Shreds”. Their follow up album “Plastic Letters” (1977) brought them more success including their first UK number one single with “Denis”.
The band then achieved worldwide fame with their third album “Parallel Lines” (1978) which contained iconic songs such as “Heart Of Glass” and “Sunday Girl” both of which topped the UK Singles Chart. Harry also became a style icon during this period with her trademark bleach blonde hair, heavy eye makeup and risqué clothing choices inspiring many female punk musicians who followed her.
Blondie continued to have success throughout the 1980s before disbanding in 1982. Harry then went solo, releasing several albums including KooKoo (1981), Rockbird (1986) and Def Dumb & Blonde (1989). She has also acted in numerous films including Hairspray (1988) Cop Land (1997), I Am Sam (2001) and Riding In Cars With Boys (2001).
Harry continues to perform today, currently touring with Blondie for their 40th anniversary celebrations. She has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of Blondie, is a recipient of a Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group, and has been given a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame for her musical achievements.
