Eddie Jerome Vedder is an American singer, musician, and songwriter best known as the lead vocalist and one of four guitarists of the rock band Pearl Jam. He also appeared as a guest vocalist in Temple of the Dog, the one-off tribute band dedicated to the late singer Andrew Wood.
Eddie Vedder was born Edward Louis Severson III on December 23, 1964, in Evanston, Illinois. His parents divorced when he was a child and his mother remarried singer/guitarist Mike McCready. Eddie's stepfather inspired him to develop an interest in music at an early age. He started playing the guitar when he was 12 and soon began writing songs of his own. After dropping out of high school, Vedder moved to San Diego where he worked as a waiter while playing in various bands.
In 1990, Vedder joined the band Pearl Jam which was formed by Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament. The band released their first album "Ten" in 1991, which became a great success and produced several hit singles such as “Alive” and “Jeremy”. "Ten" achieved diamond status (sales of over 10 million) in the United States alone and made Vedder a household name. Pearl Jam continued to produce albums that sold very well, such as "Vitalogy" (1994) and "Yield" (1998).
Outside of Pearl Jam, Vedder has also released solo albums such as "Into The Wild" (2007) and contributed soundtracks for films like "Dead Man Walking" (1995). He has also collaborated with other musicians like Neil Young ("Mirror Ball") and Cat Power ("Empty Shell"). Vedder is recognized for his dynamic stage presence and emotional live performances. He has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards and won one for Best Hard Rock Performance with Pearl Jam in 1996.
