Erykah Badu, born Erica Abi Wright on February 26, 1971 in Dallas, Texas, is an American singer-songwriter and actress. She is best known for her unique blend of soul, jazz and hip hop music, often referred to as “neo-soul”. Badu began singing professionally in the late 1990s after signing with Kedar Entertainment, and released her debut album “Baduizm” in 1997. Her second album “Mama's Gun” was released in 2000 and earned her a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. 

Badu has since released five more studio albums, including “New Amerykah Part One (4th World War)”, which reached No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 chart. In addition to her music career she has also had numerous acting roles in films such as “The Cider House Rules” and “The Fighting Temptations”. Aside from her work in music and film she has also been involved in numerous charitable causes including HIV/AIDS awareness and education campaigns.
