Gillian Anderson was born on August 9, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois. She is of English, Irish, and German descent. Her father, Edward Anderson, was a computer analyst who later worked as a film producer. Her mother, Rosemary Alyce (née Lane), was an artist and a schoolteacher.

Anderson began her acting career at the age of 22 when she starred in the British television series ‘The X-Files’ as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully. She won numerous awards for the role including two Golden Globe Awards for Best Actress in a Drama Series and one Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

She went on to appear in various films such as ‘The House of Mirth’ (2000), ‘The Mighty Celt’ (2005), ‘An Education’ (2009), and ‘Shadow Dancer’ (2012). In addition to these films, she also starred in television shows such as ‘Hannibal’ (2013-2015) and ‘American Gods’ (2017-2019). Most recently, she appeared in Netflix's miniseries 'Sex Education' (2019-present).

In addition to acting, Anderson is also an activist who advocates for animal rights and environmental issues. She has received numerous accolades and honors throughout her career including being named one of People magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in the World in 1997.
