Janet Damita Jo Jackson was born on May 16, 1966, in Gary, Indiana. She is an American singer-songwriter and actress. She is the youngest of the nine Jackson siblings and has been performing since the age of seven. Her parents were Joseph Walter "Joe" Jackson, a musician, and Katherine Esther (née Scruse).
Jackson began her singing career at a young age with her family's band The Jackson 5, where she sang background vocals. After leaving the group in 1984, she released her first solo album entitled "Janet Jackson" in 1982 which included hits such as "What Have You Done for Me Lately", "Nasty", and "The Pleasure Principle". It was the first of many albums to follow over the next two decades.
In 1989, Jackson signed with Virgin Records and released her fourth studio album "Rhythm Nation 1814" which became one of the most successful albums ever released by a female artist. It spawned several hit singles including "Miss You Much", "Escapade", and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)". The album won three Grammy Awards as well as numerous other awards. Other notable releases include "The Velvet Rope" (1997), "All For You" (2001), and "20 Y.O." (2006).
Throughout her career, Jackson has sold over 100 million records worldwide making her one of the best-selling artists of all time. She has also earned numerous awards including six Grammy Awards and five MTV Video Music Awards among others. In addition to her music career, she has appeared in films such as Poetic Justice (1993) and Nutty Professor II: The Klumps (2000).
