Jaya Bachchan is an Indian actress and politician. She is a member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from the Samajwadi Party, serving four terms since 2004.
Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan (née Bhaduri) was born on April 9, 1948 in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh, India. Her father Taroon Kumar Bhaduri was a renowned writer and her mother Indira Bhaduri was a housewife. Jaya studied at St. Joseph's Convent in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, and later attended the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune.
Jaya made her film debut with Satyen Bose’s Guddi (1971), playing the lead role of a schoolgirl who has an admiration for film actor Dharmendra. She received wide critical acclaim for her performance in the film and won the Bengal Film Journalists' Association – Most Outstanding Work of the Year Award as well as the Filmfare Best Actress Award for it. She went on to receive further success with films like Anamika (1973), Abhimaan (1973), Koshish (1972) and Sholay (1975).
In 1979, Jaya married Amitabh Bachchan and took a break from acting to focus on her family life. However, she made a comeback to acting after her children had grown up and starred in several successful films such as Hazaar Chaurasi Ki Maa (1998), Fiza (2000), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham...(2001) Parineeta (2005) and Laaga Chunari Mein Daag: Journey Of A Woman (2007).
Jaya has also been involved in politics since 2004 when she joined Samajwadi Party. In 2012 she became a Member of Parliament from Rajya Sabha representing Samajwadi Party. She has been active in social causes related to women's rights, education, poverty alleviation and health care in India.
