John Roger Stephens, better known by his stage name John Legend, was born on December 28, 1978, in Springfield, Ohio. His zodiac sign is Capricorn. He is the son of Phyllis Elaine and Ronald Lamar Stephens, and he has two younger siblings.

Legend attended a local Catholic school for elementary and middle school before attending North High School in Akron, Ohio. At the age of four he started playing the piano, and by nine he had already written his first song. After graduating from high school he attended the University of Pennsylvania where he double majored in English and African-American studies. He also became a member of the prestigious Afro-Blue singing group while at college.

In 2001 Legend began working on his debut album Get Lifted which was released in 2004 to critical acclaim. The album sold over three million copies worldwide and earned him eight Grammy nominations of which he won three including Best R&B Album, Best New Artist and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “Ordinary People”. In 2006 he released his second album Once Again which was also a success selling over two million copies globally and earning him two more Grammy Awards for Best Contemporary R&B Album and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance for “Heaven”.

Over the next decade Legend released four more studio albums – Evolver (2008), Wake Up! (2010), Love in the Future (2013) and Darkness and Light (2016). He has collaborated with numerous artists including Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Jay-Z, Lauryn Hill and countless others. He has won ten Grammy Awards altogether as well as an Academy Award for Best Original Song for “Glory” from Selma in 2015.
