Kevin Jerome Gilyard, better known by his stage name Kevin Gates, is an American rapper, singer, and entrepreneur. He is currently signed to Bread Winners' Association with a partnership with Atlantic Records.
Kevin Gates, born Kevin Jerome Gilyard on February 5, 1986 in New Orleans, Louisiana, is an American rapper and singer. He grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and started rapping at the age of 14. In 2007 he started his own record label called Bread Winners’ Association with partner C-Loc. After releasing several mixtapes between 2007 and 2011 he was signed to Young Money Entertainment in 2013.
In January 2016 Gates released his debut studio album Islah which debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart and was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). His single “2 Phones” peaked at number 17 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. His second album By Any Means 2 was released in 2017 and reached number 4 on the US Billboard 200 chart. He has also appeared as a featured artist on several songs by other artists such as Gucci Mane's "I Don't Love Her", T.I.'s "Wit Me" and Rick Ross' "Same Hoes".
In 2018 Gates was sentenced to 30 months in prison for violating terms of his parole related to prior gun possession charges but was released early due to good behavior. Following his release from prison he released Luca Brasi 3 which would become his highest charting project peaking at number four on the US Billboard 200 chart. He also reunited with Bread Winners' Association for the 2019 studio album Only The Generals Gon Understand which received positive reviews from music critics.
