Gerald Maxwell Rivera, known mononymously as Maxwell, is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and record producer. He rose to prominence following the release of his debut studio album Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite, which received widespread acclaim, and spawned the singles "Ascension" and "Sumthin' Sumthin'".
Maxwell was born on May 23, 1973, in Brooklyn, New York. His zodiac sign is Gemini and his ethnicity is African-American. He is the son of a Haitian immigrant father and an African-American mother. Maxwell grew up in Brooklyn and began singing at a young age, performing in church and school choirs. At age 18, he moved to North Carolina to pursue a degree in music production from North Carolina Central University.

This was followed by four more albums; ‘blackSUMMERS'night’ (2016), ‘Night’ (2017), ‘Nightsongs: Live & Unplugged’ (2018), and ‘The Glass House: The Music of Partition’ (2019).
Throughout his career, Maxwell has earned numerous award nominations including 11 BET Awards nominations, 3 American Music Awards nominations, 12 NAACP Image Awards nominations winning 4 times out of those 12. He has also won 6 Soul Train Music Awards out of 16 nominations. He continues to be one of the most influential figures in contemporary music today.
