NeNe Leakes was born Linnethia Monique Johnson on December 13, 1967, in Queens, New York. Her zodiac sign is Sagittarius and her ethnicity is African-American. She was the oldest of four children in her family and had a difficult upbringing. She moved to Athens, Georgia with her mother when she was eight years old and finished high school there.

After graduating high school, she worked as a bank teller and later opened a clothing store called ‘Swagg’ in Atlanta. In 2008, she landed an audition for the reality television series ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’ which would become her big break. The show premiered in October 2008 and focused on the lives of six female cast members living in Atlanta, including NeNe Leakes. On the show, Leakes gained much popularity due to her witty one-liners and humorous arguments with the other housewives. She became one of the highest paid cast members on the show and appeared as a main character until 2015 when she departed from the series to focus on other projects such as her own spin-off shows.

Leakes made several appearances in movies including Glee, Think Like A Man Too, The Single Moms Club and What to Expect When You're Expecting. She also released two books; Never Make The Same Mistake Twice: Lessons On Love And Life Learned The Hard Way (2011) and I'm Very Good At What I Do: How Nene Leakes Became One Of America's Most Beloved TV Stars (2015). In 2019, she returned to The Real Housewives Of Atlanta for its eleventh season.
