Sade Adu, known professionally as Sade, is a Nigerian-born British singer, songwriter and actress. She was born on January 16, 1959 in Ibadan, Nigeria to Adebisi Adu and Anne Hayes. Her family moved to London when she was four years old. As a young adult, she attended Dunraven School and studied fashion design at Saint Martin's School of Art.

In 1983, Sade formed the band Pride with some friends from college. The group released their debut album Diamond Life in 1984, which became an international success. The album featured hit singles such as "Smooth Operator", "Your Love Is King" and "Hang On To Your Love". The album reached number one on the UK Albums Chart and earned her two Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance for her single “Smooth Operator”.

In 1985, Pride released their second album Promise which included popular hits like "The Sweetest Taboo" and "Is It a Crime". The band released two more albums before disbanding in 1989. In 1992, Sade embarked on her solo career with her fourth studio album Love Deluxe which spawned the hits "No Ordinary Love" and "Kiss of Life". In 2000, she released her fifth studio album Lovers Rock which featured the hit single "By Your Side". Since then she has gone on to release three more successful studio albums: Soldier of Love (2010), Bring Me Home (2011) and The Ultimate Collection (2012).

Sade has been nominated for numerous awards throughout her career including 12 Grammy nominations. She has also won multiple American Music Awards, Brit Awards and NAACP Image Awards among others. Throughout her career she has sold over 50 million albums worldwide making her one of the best-selling female artists of all time.
