John Simon Ritchie, better known by his stage name Sid Vicious, was an English musician, best known as the bassist for the punk rock band Sex Pistols.
Sid Vicious, born Simon John Ritchie on May 10th, 1957 in London, England, was an English punk rock musician and bass player. He is best known as the bassist for the punk rock band The Sex Pistols from 1977 to 1978. He was also well-known for his chaotic lifestyle and drug abuse.
Vicious began playing guitar at age 11 when his mother bought him his first guitar. At age 16 he dropped out of school and got a job as a messenger boy before joining Malcolm McLaren's clothing store "Sex" as a sales assistant. He was soon introduced to the punk scene by McLaren and later joined The Sex Pistols in early 1977.
Vicious' career with The Sex Pistols lasted until early 1978 when he was arrested and charged with murder after Nancy Spungen, his girlfriend at the time, was found dead in their hotel room in New York City. Vicious denied involvement but was unable to make bail and died of an accidental heroin overdose on February 2nd 1979 while awaiting trial.
Although Vicious had a short lived career, he is credited for helping to popularize punk music around the world and is remembered for being one of the most influential musicians of the era.
