Alan Alda is an American actor, screenwriter, and director. A six-time Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award winner and a three time Tony Award nominee, he is best known for playing Captain Benjamin "Hawkeye" Pierce in the CBS wartime sitcom M*A*S*H. He also wrote and directed numerous episodes of the series.
Alan Alda was born Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo on January 28, 1936, in the Bronx, New York. He is of Irish and Italian descent, and his zodiac sign is Aquarius. His father, Robert Alda, was a popular actor and singer who appeared in films such as “Rio Rita” and “The Lady from Shanghai”; his mother was a former Miss New York.
Alda's acting career began at an early age when he made his Broadway debut at the age of seven. He also starred in movies like “Crimes and Misdemeanors” and “The Aviator”. Alda won six Emmy Awards for his performances in shows like “MASH” and received numerous other awards throughout his career. He is also an accomplished writer having written books like “Never Have Your Dog Stuffed: And Other Things I've Learned” and articles for publications such as The New Yorker magazine.
In addition to acting and writing, Alda has been actively involved in scientific research and education initiatives involving communication skills between scientists and laypeople. In 2013 he founded the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University where he serves as its founding director.
