Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, also known by her initials AOC, is an American politician and activist. She has served as the U.S. representative for New York's 14th congressional district since 2019, as a member of the Democratic Party.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was born on October 13, 1989, in the Bronx, New York City. Her parents are Puerto Rican and she is of mixed heritage including Italian, Spanish, and German. She was raised in a working class family and attended public school her entire life. She graduated cum laude from Boston University with a degree in economics and international relations.

After college, Ocasio-Cortez worked as an educator and community organizer before running for Congress in 2018. In June 2018, she won the Democratic primary for New York's 14th congressional district against 10-term incumbent Joe Crowley by 15 percentage points. In November 2018, she was elected to the United States House of Representatives at age 29, making her the youngest woman ever to serve in Congress at that time. 

In 2019, Ocasio-Cortez introduced The Green New Deal resolution which proposed transitioning the United States economy to 100% renewable sources of energy within 10 years while also creating millions of jobs by investing in green infrastructure projects. The resolution quickly gained traction among other progressive politicians such as Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. 

Ocasio-Cortez has become one of the most visible freshman members of Congress due to her bold progressive stances as well as her presence on social media where she shares her views on policy issues with her followers.
