Amy Jean Klobuchar is an American politician and lawyer serving as the senior United States senator from Minnesota, a seat she has held since 2007. A member of the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party, Minnesota's affiliate of the Democratic Party, she previously served as the attorney of Hennepin County.
Amy Jean Klobuchar was born on May 25, 1960, in Plymouth, Minnesota. She is the eldest of Jim and Rose Heffernan's four children and has one sister and two brothers. Her father worked as a sportswriter for the Minneapolis Star Tribune and her mother was an elementary school teacher. She was raised in the Catholic faith.
Klobuchar attended Wayzata High School in Plymouth and graduated from Yale University with a degree in political science. After college, she went to work for former U.S. Senator Dave Durenberger as a legislative aide, which sparked her interest in politics. In 1998, she ran for Hennepin County Attorney and won the election by just a few thousand votes. As County Attorney, she prosecuted several high-profile cases, including those involving domestic violence and drug abuse.
In 2006, Klobuchar announced her candidacy for United States Senate and won the election by a large margin over Republican candidate Mark Kennedy. During her time in office, she has been a champion of legislation that supports veterans, seniors, students and small businesses. She has also introduced bills to combat climate change and promote clean energy initiatives. In 2020, she announced her candidacy for President of the United States in the Democratic primary election but later dropped out of the race after poor showings on Super Tuesday.
