Andre Kirk Agassi is an American former world No. 1 tennis player. He is an eight-time major champion and an Olympic gold medalist, as well as a runner-up in seven other majors. Agassi is the second of five men to achieve the career Grand Slam in the Open Era and the fifth of eight overall to make the achievement.
Andre Kirk Agassi was born April 29, 1970 in Las Vegas, Nevada. He is the son of Elizabeth (née Dudley) and Mike Agassi, an Olympic boxer from Iran. His father immigrated to the United States in 1957 and his mother worked as a nurse for many years. Agassi has two older siblings, Rita and Philip.
Agassi started playing tennis at a young age, and by the time he was 13, he was already competing in junior tournaments. In 1986, at the age of 16, he became the youngest player to ever win the U.S. Junior Indoor Championships before turning pro later that year. He quickly rose to stardom with his aggressive playing style and attractive looks, becoming one of the most recognizable athletes in the world.
In 1992, Agassi won his first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and went on to become one of only eight players ever to complete a Career Grand Slam after winning all four major championships - Australian Open (1995), French Open (1999), Wimbledon (1992) and US Open (1994). He also won more than 60 singles titles throughout his career including eight Masters Series events.
Agassi retired from professional tennis in 2006 after 20 years on tour but remains active in philanthropy through his Andre Agassi Foundation for Education which raises money for underprivileged children to attend school in Las Vegas, Nevada.
