Anthony Stephen Fauci OMRI is an American physician-scientist and immunologist who served as the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022, and the chief medical advisor to the president from 2021 to 2022.
Anthony Stephen Fauci was born on December 24, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York. He is an American physician and immunologist who has served as the Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases since 1984, under six presidents. He is one of the leading experts in the U.S. on infectious diseases, particularly HIV/AIDS.
Fauci attended Regis High School in Manhattan before attending the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. After graduating from college with a Bachelor’s degree in 1962, he went on to attend medical school at Cornell University Medical College where he received his M.D. in 1966. After completing his residency at The New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in 1969, Fauci joined the National Institutes of Health as a clinical associate in the Laboratory of Clinical Investigation at NIAID and became chief of their Laboratory of Immunoregulation in 1980.
In 1984, President Ronald Reagan appointed him to be director of the NIAID and he has held that position ever since. Under his leadership, NIAID has conducted research that has led to breakthroughs such as treatments for HIV/AIDS, treatments for hepatitis C infection, drugs to treat malaria and innovative strategies for vaccine development including new technologies for developing flu vaccines faster than ever before. He also serves as an advisor to many other federal government agencies including the Department of Defense and the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
Fauci has been awarded numerous honors throughout his career including election to membership in both the Institute of Medicine and National Academy of Sciences and numerous honorary degrees from universities across America such as Dartmouth College and Emory University.
