About

Audrey Hepburn was born on May 4, 1929, in Brussels, Belgium. She was the daughter of Dutch Baroness Ella van Heemstra and Joseph Anthony Ruston, a British banker who left her mother when Audrey was six years old. Growing up during World War II, Hepburn lived in Holland and suffered from malnutrition.

At the age of 17, she moved to London to pursue her dreams of becoming a ballet dancer and began studying at the Ballet Rambert School. However, due to a spinal injury she had sustained as a child, she eventually gave up her dancing career. She then started modeling for various magazines and newspapers and eventually took acting classes at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

In 1951, Hepburn made her Hollywood debut in the film "Roman Holiday" alongside Gregory Peck. For this performance she won an Academy Award for Best Actress and also received a Golden Globe award. She went on to star in many other films including "Sabrina," "The Nun's Story," "Breakfast at Tiffany's," "My Fair Lady," and "Wait Until Dark."

Throughout her career she received several awards such as three BAFTA Awards for Best Actress in A Leading Role for Roman Holiday (1953) The Nun’s Story (1959) and Wait Until Dark (1967). In 1993, she was awarded the Academy Honorary Award for lifetime achievement which made her one of only two actresses to win both an Oscar and an honorary Oscar.

Apart from acting, Hepburn was also a humanitarian who worked with UNICEF since 1988 until her death in 1993. Furthermore, she also wrote two books: “Audrey Style” released in 1998 which is about fashion style; and “Enchanted Tales” released in 1992 which is about stories written by children around the world.
