Azealia Amanda Banks was born on May 31, 1991, in Harlem, New York City. She is an American rapper, singer and songwriter who has released three studio albums and several mixtapes. Growing up in a single-parent household, music was always a large part of her life. She began writing rap lyrics at the age of 14 and attended LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in Manhattan where she studied performing arts and graduated with honors. 

Banks first gained recognition after releasing the controversial track “212” in 2011. The song received critical acclaim from critics and fans alike and would become her breakout single. She then signed with Universal Records but later left the label due to creative differences. In 2012, Banks released her debut album Broke With Expensive Taste which included the singles “Chasing Time” and “Yung Rapunxel” among others. The album was a commercial success and earned her a nomination for the 2014 Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album. 

In 2014, Banks released her second studio album called Slay-Z which featured collaborations with Pharrell Williams and Rick Ross among others. Banks has also been involved in numerous controversies over the years including feuds with other rappers such as Nicki Minaj, Iggy Azalea, Kreayshawn, Cardi B and Lil Kim as well as being involved in social media feuds with celebrities like Sarah Palin, Zayn Malik and Lana Del Rey among many others. Banks has also appeared on television shows such as Wild 'N Out on MTV2 as well as RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars 4 on VH1 .
