Edward Michael "Bear" Grylls OBE is a British adventurer, writer, television presenter and businessman. He first drew attention after embarking on a number of adventures, and then became widely known for his television series Man vs. Wild.
Bear Grylls was born Edward Michael Grylls on June 7, 1974, in Donaghadee, County Down, Northern Ireland. His father was an Anglican priest, and his mother was a writer and educator. He has two sisters, Lara and Jesse. At the age of 16, he completed the Ten Tors challenge across Dartmoor.
In 1996, Bear received his commission in The Royal Marines Reserve and served in the 21 SAS regiment for three years until 1997 when he left due to a parachute accident that broke his back in three places. After his recovery, Bear successfully summited Mount Everest making him the youngest Briton to have ever done so at the age of 23.
After climbing Everest, Bear become a motivational speaker and began writing books about his adventures. In 2006 he released the first installment of his autobiography series titled “Mud Sweat & Tears” which became a bestseller. He also became involved in television with Discovery Channel's “Man vs Wild” where he showed viewers how to survive in extreme environments around the world. His show is credited with inspiring many people to venture outdoors and explore nature.
Since Man vs Wild ended in 2011, Bear has gone on to host numerous other shows such as “The Island with Bear Grylls” (2014), “Bear Grylls: Mission Survive” (2015) and “Running Wild with Bear Grylls” (2016).
In addition to television work, Bear is also an entrepreneur who founded a brand of outdoor gear called BearGrylls Survival Academy where customers can attend classes taught by himself or members of his team on survival skills ranging from archery to navigation techniques. He also serves as Chief Scout for The Scout Association since 2009 inspiring children all over the world to take up outdoor activities and adventure.
