Carole King Klein is an American singer, songwriter, and musician who has been active since 1958, initially as one of the staff songwriters at 1650 Broadway and later as a solo artist.
Carole King was born Carol Joan Klein on February 9, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York. She is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has been active in popular music for over five decades. Her career began as a teenager when she wrote and recorded songs with her friends as part of the girl group The City Surfers. After graduating high school, she signed her first recording contract with Dimension Records where she released several singles under the name Carole King.
King made her solo debut in 1971 with Tapestry, which went on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time. It featured hits such as "It's Too Late" and "I Feel the Earth Move". In 1972, she released Rhymes & Reasons, which contained the hit single "You've Got A Friend". After a brief hiatus from recording, King returned in 1977 with Simple Things which included the hit single "Jazzman".
In 1988, she won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance for her duet with James Taylor "Hey Bigger". Throughout her long career, King has released over 25 albums and earned four Grammy Awards. She is also recognized for her songwriting contributions to other artists including Aretha Franklin and The Byrds. She was inducted into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and 1999 respectively.
