Colin Firth was born on September 10, 1960 in Grayshott, Hampshire, England. He is the son of Shirley Jean and David Norman Lewis Firth. His mother was a comparative religion lecturer at King Alfred’s College in Winchester, while his father was an education officer with the City of Winchester. His ancestry includes English, Scottish, Irish and distant Dutch. 

Firth began acting when he was eleven, taking part in school plays and local theatre productions. In 1978, he enrolled at the Drama Centre London to study drama and graduated three years later. In 1981, he made his television debut on “Play for Today”. Firth went on to star in several British television series including “Lost Empires” (1986) and “Apartment Zero” (1988).  

Firth gained international recognition for his performance as Mr Darcy in the 1995 BBC miniseries adaptation of Jane Austen's novel “Pride & Prejudice”. He has since starred in dozens of films and television shows such as “The English Patient” (1996), “Shakespeare In Love” (1998), “Bridget Jones's Diary” (2001), “Love Actually” (2003), “The King's Speech” (2010) and “Kingsman: The Secret Service” (2014). For his performance as King George VI in The King's Speech, he won an Academy Award for Best Actor in 2011. He was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2011 for services to drama.
