Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja, known professionally as Dhanush, is an Indian actor, producer, director, lyricist and playback singer who predominantly works in Tamil cinema.
About
Dhanush was born on July 28, 1983 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. His birth name is Venkatesh Prabhu Kasthuri Raja and he has been credited with a variety of names throughout his career including Dhanush, Dhanushkodi and Kalaipuli S. Dhanush. He is the son of director Kasthuri Raja and the brother of actor-director Selvaraghavan.
Dhanush made his acting debut in 2002's Thulluvadho Ilamai at the age of 19. The film opened to good reviews and established him as a successful leading actor in Tamil cinema. Following this success, he appeared in numerous hit films such as Kadhal Kondein (2003), Pudhupettai (2006) and Polladhavan (2007). Dhanush has also had commercial success with films like Thiruda Thirudi (2003), Devathayai Kanden (2005) and Aadukalam (2011).
In 2011, Dhanush won the National Award for Best Actor for his performance in Aadukalam. This was followed by another National Award for Best Lyrics for his song "Why This Kolaveri Di" from 3 (2012). In 2013, he received further recognition when he was invited to be a part of the Academy Awards ceremony as an ambassador for India.
Apart from acting in films, Dhanush has also ventured into producing with projects such as Ethir Neechal (2013) and Velaiyilla Pattathari (2014). He has also done playback singing for some of his own movies as well as other Tamil movies.
