America Georgine Ferrera was born on April 18, 1984 in Los Angeles, California. She is of Honduran descent and grew up in Woodland Hills, California. She attended Catholic school and was involved in theater from a young age. As a teenager, she attended the University of Southern California’s School of Theatre where she won several awards for her performances.

Ferrera made her television debut in 2002 with a guest appearance on “Sister, Sister” before landing her breakout role as Betty Suarez on ABC’s hit comedy-drama “Ugly Betty” in 2006. The show earned her numerous awards including an Emmy Award, Golden Globe Award and Screen Actors Guild Award. After the show ended its run in 2010, Ferrera starred in films such as “The Dry Land” (2010), “Our Family Wedding” (2010) and “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” (2008).

She returned to television with the NBC drama series “Superstore” in 2015, which ran until 2021 and earned Ferrera multiple nominations at various awards ceremonies including the Critics Choice Television Awards and Teen Choice Awards. Additionally, Ferrera has done voice work for animated films such as “How To Train Your Dragon 2” (2014) and “The Croods” (2013). In 2017 she produced and directed short film “Gente-fied” for Netflix. 

In 2020 she was announced as one of the producers for the upcoming reboot of Ugly Betty titled "Uglydolls". Additionally she has been involved in activism since 2011 when she co-founded the organization Harness which works to create social change through storytelling.
