Claire Danes was born on April 12, 1979 in Manhattan, New York. She is the daughter of Carla and Chris Danes, both of whom are visual artists. Claire attended the Dalton School in New York and later enrolled at Yale University to study psychology. 

Claire's acting career began when she was a child, appearing in off-Broadway productions such as "Les Misérables" and "Anastasia". She then moved to Los Angeles to pursue her career further and landed roles in films such as "Little Women", "I Love You, I Love You Not" and "Home for the Holidays". 

In 1996, she made her television debut in an episode of the series Law & Order. Her big break came when she was cast as Angela Chase in the teen drama My So-Called Life, which earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. She went on to star in several other television series including Romeo + Juliet, The Hours and Homeland. 

Claire has also had roles in several films including Stardust, Shopgirl, Me and Orson Welles and The Family Stone. In 2020 she appeared as Temple Grandin in the title role of HBO's biopic film about the autistic scientist. Her performance earned her an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress. 

Aside from acting, Claire is also a philanthropist who supports causes related to homelessness, education reform and mental health awareness. She is married to actor Hugh Dancy with whom she has two children.
