Annette Carol Bening is an American actress. She has received various accolades throughout her career spanning over four decades, including a British Academy Film Award and two Golden Globe Awards, in addition to nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award, two Tony Awards, and four Academy Awards.
Annette Francine Bening was born on May 29, 1958, in Topeka, Kansas. She is an American actress who has starred in many Hollywood films such as The Grifters, Valley Girl, and American Beauty.
Bening attended San Diego Mesa College and then transferred to San Francisco State University where she studied acting with John Lehne. She made her stage debut at the Old Globe Theatre in San Diego after graduating from college. She then moved to New York City to pursue a career in theater and made her Broadway debut in Coastal Disturbances. Her performance earned her a Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress.
In 1989, Bening made her feature film debut in Valmont, based on the novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses. In 1990, she starred in The Grifters alongside John Cusack and Anjelica Huston which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress. In 1999, she starred opposite Kevin Spacey in the critically acclaimed American Beauty which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.
Bening has also appeared on television shows such as Will & Grace and 30 Rock as well as voice roles for animated movies including Antz and Stardust. She has also taken on supporting roles in films like Being Julia and Running with Scissors. In 2011, she starred opposite Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo in The Kids Are All Right which earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. Bening currently stars in the Showtime series Mrs. America which premiered in 2020.
