Anthony Michael Bourdain was an American celebrity chef, author, and travel documentarian who starred in programs focusing on the exploration of international culture, cuisine, and the human condition.
Anthony Bourdain was born June 25, 1956 in New York City. He was raised in Leonia, New Jersey, the son of Gladys (Sacksman) and Pierre Bourdain, a music executive. His father and his father's family were French-Canadian descent. Bourdain attended The Englewood School for Boys in New Jersey and Vassar College before dropping out.
He began working as a dishwasher at a seafood restaurant in Provincetown, Massachusetts, where he eventually became a chef. He went on to become Executive Chef of Brasserie Les Halles in Manhattan, which is where he gained fame with his book “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly” published in 2000.
Bourdain wrote several books on food and travel including “A Cook’s Tour” and “No Reservations”. He was also the host of two popular Travel Channel shows: “No Reservations” from 2005-2012 and “The Layover” from 2011-2013. From 2013-2015 he served as host of CNN’s “Parts Unknown” which earned him multiple Emmy Awards. In 2017 he began hosting a new series called “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” on CNN.
In addition to his television shows, Bourdain also wrote extensively about food and travel culture for various magazines including The New Yorker, Gourmet magazine and The Times Magazine UK among others. He was an outspoken advocate for fair wages for restaurant workers and supported social justice causes such as immigration reform.
Bourdain died by suicide on June 8th 2018 while filming an episode of Parts Unknown in Strasbourg France. He is survived by his daughter Ariane, mother Gladys and ex-wife Ottavia Busia.
