Bette Midler was born on December 1, 1945, in Honolulu, Hawaii. She is an American singer, songwriter, actress, comedian, and film producer. She grew up in a Jewish family of three sisters and one brother. Her father worked as a house painter and her mother was a seamstress. Midler attended Radford High School for her secondary education before moving to New York City in 1965. 

Midler’s career began in the 1960s when she performed at local clubs in New York City. In 1972 she released her first album “The Divine Miss M” which included her hit single “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy”. The success of this album enabled Midler to perform at Carnegie Hall where she made her debut performance in 1973. In 1979 Midler starred in the movie “The Rose” which earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress. 

In the 1980s Midler continued to release albums and perform live concerts as well as acting roles in films like Beaches (1988). She won two Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Album of the Year with her 1989 album “Wind Beneath My Wings”. In 1993 she returned to Broadway performing the lead role in the musical “Hello Dolly!” which earned her a Tony Award for Best Actress. 

In 2004 Midler released her eleventh studio album “Sings The Peggy Lee Songbook” which won two Grammy Awards for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album and Producer Of The Year (Non-Classical). In 2008 she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and most recently appeared as herself in Netflix's series "Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life" (2016).
