Chase graduated from Riverdale Country School in 1961 and went on to attend Bard College, where he was a member of the rowing team. He later transferred to Haverford College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature and Spanish language.

Chase began his career as a writer for National Lampoon magazine before landing a role on the television show Saturday Night Live in 1975.
