Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper Thornton is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and activist. Her career has spanned over 40 years.
Cyndi Lauper was born on June 22, 1953, in Brooklyn, New York. She is of German and Italian descent. Her father Fred was a fireman and her mother Catrine (a seamstress) was an Italian immigrant. They divorced when Lauper was 5 years old and she was raised by her mother.
Lauper developed an interest in music at a young age, taking piano lessons from the age of 5 and singing in choirs around the city. She attended Richmond Hill High School in Queens and became involved with the school's theater group. After graduating high school, Lauper moved to Manhattan and worked as a waitress while studying at the New York City Technical College for two semesters. In 1978, she joined an all-girl band called Blue Angel and released their debut album “Cindy & The Blue Angel” the following year.
In 1983, Lauper released her debut solo album “She’s So Unusual” which went on to become a major success with singles such as “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” and “Time After Time” featuring on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. During this time she also made history as being one of the first female artists to write their own songs and be credited as sole composer on both tracks that reached number one on the Billboard Top 100 chart.
Throughout her career, Lauper has gone on to release 10 studio albums, numerous singles and even ventured into acting with roles in films such as Vibes (1988), Life With Mikey (1993) and Spaceballs (1987). She has received multiple awards including two Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for The Big C (2010), four MTV Video Music Awards and many more accolades during her long-standing career spanning over four decades.
