Dev Patel is a British actor. He began acting by playing Anwar Kharral in the teen drama series Skins in 2007. His breakthrough came in 2008 with the leading role of Jamal Malik in Danny Boyle's drama Slumdog Millionaire, for which he was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Dev Patel was born on April 23, 1990 in Harrow, London, England. He is of Indian heritage and his parents are from the Indian state of Gujarat. His mother is a caregiver and his father is an IT consultant. Dev attended Longfields Primary School and Whitmore High School before enrolling at the Rayners Lane Academy. It was here that he attended acting classes and began to pursue a career in acting.

     Dev's first role was in the 2006 British television series Skins where he played Anwar Kharral for two seasons. This led to bigger roles such as being cast as Jamal Malik in Danny Boyle’s 2008 movie Slumdog Millionaire which earned him numerous nominations including a BAFTA Award and Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role. In 2010, Dev starred as Neal Sampat in Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom which won him a Critics' Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Movie/Miniseries. 

     In 2016, Dev starred opposite Nicole Kidman and Rooney Mara in Lion which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Other notable films include The Last Airbender (2010), The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015) and Hotel Mumbai (2018). His latest project is the 2019 film The Wedding Guest which also stars Radhika Apte.

     On top of his acting career, Dev has also been involved with numerous philanthropic organizations such as Comic Relief, UNICEF UK, Diabetes UK and Plan UK.
