Eddie Murphy was born on April 3, 1961 in Brooklyn, New York. His father was Charles Edward Murphy, a transit police officer and his mother was Lillian Murphy, a telephone operator. Eddie has seven siblings: four brothers, Charlie Jr., Vernon, Christian and John; two sisters, Patricia and Theresa; and one half brother, George. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1979.

Murphy began performing stand-up comedy at the age of 15. He caught the attention of Saturday Night Live (SNL) producer Lorne Michaels and was offered a spot on SNL as a cast member for its 1980–1981 season. He became the show's breakout star and left after two seasons to pursue a career as an actor.

He made his first feature film debut in 1982's 48 Hrs., followed by Trading Places (1983), Beverly Hills Cop (1984), Coming to America (1988), The Nutty Professor (1996), Doctor Dolittle (1998) and Shrek (2001). In 2007 he reprised his most popular role as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop III. Other notable films include Dreamgirls (2006), Tower Heist (2011) and Dolemite Is My Name (2019). He has starred in several family-friendly films such as Daddy Day Care (2003) and The Haunted Mansion (2003). 

In addition to acting, Murphy is also an accomplished singer with five albums under his belt: How Could It Be? (1985); So Happy (1989); Love's Alright (1993); Vicious Rumors  (1994); and Party All the Time  (1997).

Murphy has won numerous awards throughout his career including Golden Globe Awards for Best Supporting Actor in Dreamgirls and Best Actor in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for The Nutty Professor. He has also been nominated for Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for Dreamgirls and Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in A Comedy Series for 30 Rock.
