Edward Harrison Norton was born on August 18, 1969 in Boston, Massachusetts. He is an American actor and filmmaker. His father Edward Mower Norton Sr. was a former federal prosecutor while his mother Lydia Robinson "Robin" (Rouse) Norton was an English teacher and passed away when he was five years old. His parents were both from wealthy families and raised him in the city of Columbia, Maryland.

Norton attended school at Yale University before graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history in 1991. After college, he moved to Japan for two years to study Japanese art and culture before returning to the United States to pursue a career in acting. He made his film debut in Primal Fear (1996), which earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor and an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.

In 1998, he starred alongside Brad Pitt in Fight Club (1999), which earned him critical acclaim among critics and fans alike and established him as one of Hollywood’s leading actors. Since then, he has appeared in numerous films including The Italian Job (2003), The Incredible Hulk (2008), Moonrise Kingdom (2012), The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014) and Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014). He also directed and produced Keeping the Faith (2000).

In addition to his acting career, Norton is also active in philanthropy and activism causes, often lending his voice to causes such as poverty alleviation, human rights awareness and animal rights protection. He serves on the board of several charities such as Enterprise Community Partners, Stand Up To Cancer and Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust.
