He was born in Long Beach, California and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. He began his musical career as a ghostwriter for artists such as Brandy and John Legend before gaining recognition through the Odd Future collective and eventually releasing his own material.

Ocean's debut studio album, Channel Orange (2012), debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart and was quickly certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). His follow-up album, Blonde (2016), received widespread critical acclaim and became his first number-one album in the United States.
