About

Grace Jones was born on May 19, 1948 in Spanish Town, Jamaica. She grew up with six siblings in a religious family; her father was a bishop of a Pentecostal church and her mother was a preacher. She studied at the Jamaica School of Music and then moved to Syracuse University to pursue theatre studies.

In 1975, Jones moved to New York City and started working as a model while also becoming involved in the city's nightlife. It wasn't long before she got noticed by record companies and signed her first recording contract with Island Records in 1977. Her debut album entitled “Portfolio” released in 1977 followed by “Fame” (1978), “Muse” (1979) and “Warm Leatherette” (1980). These albums blended R&B, reggae, disco and new wave music which helped to define the sound of the 1980s.

Jones' success soon gained her international fame with appearances on television shows such as "The Jacksons" (1981) and "The A-Team" (1984). In 1985, Jones released her most famous album titled “Slave to the Rhythm” which included her iconic single "Pull Up To The Bumper". In 1986, Jones appeared in the movie Vamp alongside Chris Makepeace and Robert Rusler. She also had a starring role in the movie Boomerang alongside Eddie Murphy in 1992.

Throughout her career, Jones has been nominated for two Grammy Awards, an MTV Video Music Award, five Brit Awards and two Silver Clef Awards. She is also an inductee into both the Dance Music Hall of Fame as well as Hollywood's Walk Of Fame.
