Halsey, born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane on September 29, 1994, is an American singer, songwriter and actress. She was born in Edison, New Jersey and raised in nearby Clark. Her parents divorced when she was a child and her father's family is of African-American descent while her mother's is of Italian and Hungarian descent. Growing up, Halsey experienced bullying due to her mixed race heritage.

Halsey began writing music at the age of 17 and released her debut EP, Room 93, in 2014. The EP peaked at #3 on the US Heatseekers chart and she signed with Astralwerks shortly thereafter. Her debut album Badlands arrived in 2015 and debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. The album spawned several successful singles including "New Americana," "Colors" and "Ghost." In 2016, Halsey released the single "Closer," a collaboration with The Chainsmokers that topped the charts in more than 10 countries around the world.

In 2017, Halsey released her second studio album Hopeless Fountain Kingdom which featured collaborations with Lauren Jauregui from Fifth Harmony, Quavo from Migos and Cashmere Cat among others. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 chart and earned Halsey two Grammy nominations for Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for "Closer."

Halsey has also become increasingly active as an activist since 2017 advocating for causes such as gun reform, mental health awareness and LGBTQ rights. She has spoken out strongly against President Donald Trump's administration policies regarding immigration and women's rights issues.
