Irene (born Irene Kim, March 29, 1991) is a South Korean pop singer based in Seoul. She is best known for being the leader and main rapper of the girl group Red Velvet, as well as being a sub-vocalist and visual of the group. She debuted as a solo artist with her first mini album Monster on June 14th, 2020.

Irene was born in Daegu, South Korea, to parents Kim Young-Hee and Jo Sung-Rok. She has an older brother who is three years her senior and she attended Haknam High School in Seoul. At the age of 13, she moved to Japan to attend school there and took up dancing classes while there.

She joined SM Entertainment as a trainee in 2009 and went through four years of training before debuting with Red Velvet in August 2014. Along with being the main rapper of the group, she also takes part in creating choreography for their performances. Her solo singing career began when she released her single "Happiness" for SM Station on April 8th, 2015.

In 2016, Irene became the host of OnStyle's Fashion King Korea alongside Park Bo-gum; this was followed by appearances on variety shows such as Knowing Bros and The Show from 2017 onwards. In 2019, she made her acting debut in SBS' drama series The Great Show alongside Song Seung-heon and Lee Sun-bin.

Her first solo album Monster was released on June 14th 2020 to critical acclaim, peaking at number two on Billboard's World Albums Chart and selling over 200,000 copies in its first week alone.
