Shawn Corey Carter, better known by his stage name Jay-Z, was born on December 4, 1969 in Brooklyn, New York. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius and his ethnicity is African-American. He was raised by his mother Gloria Carter and father Adnis Reeves, with four siblings. His mother worked for the city housing authority while his father abandoned the family when he was 11 years old.

Jay-Z began selling music out of his car at age 16 and started rapping at age 17. He first gained recognition after releasing his debut album Reasonable Doubt in 1996, which peaked at number 23 on the Billboard 200 chart. After the success of Reasonable Doubt, Jay-Z released a series of albums with increasing commercial success including Vol. 2… Hard Knock Life (1998), The Blueprint (2001), The Black Album (2003) and Kingdom Come (2006). He has since sold over 50 million albums worldwide and is one of the most successful hip hop artists of all time.

In 2008, Jay-Z became president of Def Jam Recordings and later founded Roc Nation in 2009, a record label and entertainment company. In 2014, he opened 40/40 Club in Manhattan as well as entering into a three year residency at Barclays Center that same year called “Brooklyn’s Best Shows”. He also co-owns TIDAL streaming service along with a variety of other businesses including clothing lines, nightclubs and restaurants.

Jay-Z has won 20 Grammy Awards throughout his career and is widely considered to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. He has been married to singer Beyoncé Knowles since 2008 and they have three children together; Blue Ivy Carter (born 2012), Sir Carter (born 2017) and Rumi Carter (born 2017).
