Shawn Corey Carter, better known by his stage name Jay-Z, was born on December 4, 1969 in Brooklyn, New York. His zodiac sign is Sagittarius and his ethnicity is African-American. He was raised by his mother Gloria Carter and father Adnis Reeves, with four siblings. His mother worked for the city housing authority while his father abandoned the family when he was 11 years old.

Jay-Z began selling music out of his car at age 16 and started rapping at age 17. He first gained recognition after releasing his debut album Reasonable Doubt in 1996, which peaked at number 23 on the Billboard 200 chart.
