About

James Douglas Morrison was born in Melbourne, Florida on December 8, 1943. He was the son of Admiral George Stephen Morrison and his wife Clara Clark Morrison. Growing up, he spent time living with his family in California, Virginia, and Washington D.C.

Morrison attended St. Petersburg College before transferring to Florida State University where he majored in film and theater studies. After dropping out of college, he moved to Los Angeles in 1964 and formed the band The Doors with Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger, and John Densmore. The band released their debut album “The Doors” in 1967 which contained the No.1 hit single “Light My Fire” and went on to become one of the most successful rock bands of all time.

In 1969, Morrison released his first solo album “An American Prayer” which contained poetry written by him that had been set to music by the remaining members of The Doors. His second solo album “L.A. Woman” was released in 1971 and featured some of his best known songs such as “Riders On The Storm” and “Love Her Madly”. In 1971 he also wrote a book titled “The Lords And The New Creatures” which featured a collection of poetry and short stories by him.

On July 3rd 1971 Morrison died at age 27 from an apparent heart attack while visiting Paris with his girlfriend Pam Courson. He is considered one of the greatest singers in rock music history and is often referred to as the "Lizard King" due to his stage presence during live performances with The Doors.
