Julie Bowen Luetkemeyer was born on March 3, 1970 in Baltimore, Maryland. She is an American actress and director who is best known for her roles as Claire Dunphy on the sitcom Modern Family and Denise Bauer on the legal drama Boston Legal. She attended Brown University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Italian Renaissance studies. 

Bowen made her television debut with a minor role in the 1994 TV movie Camp Cucamonga. Her first major role was as Carol Vessey on Ed (2000-2004). She then starred as Sarah Shephard in Lost (2005-2006) and as Denise Bauer on Boston Legal (2006-2007). In 2009, she began portraying Claire Dunphy on the hit ABC sitcom Modern Family, which earned her five Primetime Emmy Award nominations and two wins.

Bowen has also appeared in films such as Happy Gilmore (1996), Joe Somebody (2001), Kids in America (2005), Sex and Death 101 (2007), Horrible Bosses 2 (2014) and Deidra & Laney Rob a Train (2017). On top of that, she has guest starred on various shows such as The Mindy Project, New Girl, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and Hot in Cleveland. 

In addition to acting, Bowen has directed episodes of Modern Family and Single Parents. She also wrote an episode of Modern Family titled "Under Pressure".
