Karly-Marina Loaiza, known professionally as Kali Uchis, is an American singer. She released her debut mixtape, Drunken Babble, in 2012, which was followed by her debut EP, Por Vida, released in 2015. In 2018, Uchis released her debut studio album Isolation to widespread acclaim.
Kali Uchis was born on July 17, 1994 in Alexandria, Virginia. Her parents are Colombian immigrants who left their home country for the United States in search of a better life. She began singing at the age of 7 and had her first performance at a school talent show in high school. Uchis studied music production at Full Sail University in Florida before moving to Los Angeles to pursue her musical career.
Uchis released her debut EP “Drunken Babble” in 2012 and followed it up with her first album “Por Vida” (2015). Her second album “Isolation” dropped in 2018 and cemented her status as one of R&B’s most promising stars. The album earned Uchis two Grammy nominations and won her the Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Music Album.
In addition to her solo projects, Uchis has collaborated with various artists including Tyler The Creator, Gorillaz, Jorja Smith, Diplo, Major Lazer, Steve Lacy and more. She has also contributed vocals to many soundtracks and is set to appear on the upcoming soundtrack for Disney's film "Mulan".
Uchis is an outspoken advocate for social justice and often uses her platform to speak out against racism and sexism. In 2019 she was one of the speakers at the Women's March in Los Angeles and has since become a prominent voice in the fight for justice and equality.
