Kehlani Ashley Parrish is an American singer, songwriter, and dancer. Kehlani is originally from Oakland, California, and achieved initial fame as a member of the teen group Poplyfe in 2011. In 2014, Kehlani released their first commercial mixtape, Cloud 19.
Kehlani Ashley Parrish, most commonly known as Kehlani, was born on April 24, 1995 in Oakland, California. She is the daughter of artist Ivana Hawkins and an unknown father. Growing up she struggled with homelessness and often relied on friends to provide her with a place to stay. As a young teenager, she began singing and recording music which eventually led her to pursue a career in the music industry.
In 2014, she released her first mixtape entitled “Cloud 19” which caught the attention of R&B singer Ella Mai who signed Kehlani to her record label “10 Summers Records”. In 2015, Kehlani released her second mixtape “You Should Be Here” which earned her two Grammy nominations for Best Urban Contemporary Album and Best R&B Song. Since then, she has released several critically acclaimed albums including “SweetSexySavage” (2017), “It Was Good Until It Wasn't” (2020) and several singles such as “Good Life” featuring G-Eazy (2017).
In addition to music, Kehlani is also an advocate for mental health awareness and suicide prevention. She has been open about her own struggles with depression and bipolar disorder and has used her platform to spread awareness about these issues. In 2016, she was named one of Billboard's 21 Under 21 rising stars in the music industry.
