About

Lauryn Noelle Hill was born on May 26, 1975, in East Orange, New Jersey. She was the second of eight children born to English teacher Valerie Hill and computer programmer Mal Hill. Lauryn's parents were very supportive of her music career from a young age.

Hill attended Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey where she began writing and performing songs as a part of an R&B group called The Fugees. In 1994, The Fugees released their debut album Blunted on Reality which gained them critical acclaim and commercial success. The group went on to release their follow-up album The Score in 1996 which sold over 17 million copies worldwide and won two Grammy Awards for Best Rap Album and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.

In 1998, Hill released her critically acclaimed solo debut album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill which earned her five Grammy Awards including Album of the Year, Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, Best R&B Song and Best R&B Album. She is one of the few artists who have been honored with this many awards at once. It also broke sales records becoming the first hip hop artist to ever receive such accolades.

Since then, Hill has continued to make music sporadically releasing the albums MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 (2002) and Kisses Don't Lie (2006), as well as various singles such as "Doo Wop (That Thing)" (1998), "Ex-Factor" (1998), "Lost Ones" (1998) and "Neurotic Society" (2013). In addition to making music she has also ventured into acting appearing in films such as Sister Acts II: Back In The Habit (1993) and Hav Plenty (1998).
